The Albert Schweitzer Tournament (AST) was launched by photographer Hans-Joachim Babies and German basketball pioneer Hermann Niebuhr for the first time in 1958. At that time, eight nations took part in the tournament in Mannheim. The second tournament was held the following year before it had to be suspended between 1960 and 1965 due to funding difficulties. From 1965, a two-year rhythm was established for the AST. There was another forced break in 1991 and 1992 due to the Gulf War. After the resumption in 1993, the decision was made to align the AST with the FIBA calendar and the tournament was held in even years. The tournament took place without exception until the coronavirus pandemic in 2019 and will now celebrate its return and 30th edition in 2024. Over time, the AST has become one of the most important international youth basketball tournaments and has been the stage for many future basketball world stars.
